Mumbai: Sawan Somwar, also known as Shravan Somwar, is a deeply revered event celebrated with great devotion across India. This auspicious occasion occurs on Mondays during the Hindu lunar calendar’s Sawan (Shravan) month. In 2024, Sawan will begin on July 22 and end on August 19.
According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva is especially revered on Mondays during the Sawan month. This period is considered highly auspicious for seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings and fulfilling one’s desires.
Sawan is the holiest month in the Hindu calendar. Devotees often observe a strict fast, abstaining from certain foods and engaging in spiritual practices to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.
Devotees perform Abhishek- pour water, milk, or other sacred offerings over the Shiva Lingam. This ritual is believed to purify the mind and soul, bringing blessings and prosperity.
Hindu temples, especially those dedicated to Lord Shiva, see a significant increase in devotees on Sawan Somwars. Worshippers visit these temples to offer prayers, circumambulate the Shiva Lingam, and participate in aartis (sacred rituals) led by temple priests.
In some regions, Sawan Somwar celebrations include traditional fairs known as ‘Sawan Melas.’
