New Delhi: India’s outgoing batting coach Vikram Rathour has backed Shubman Gill to become India’s all-format captain in the future. Rathour said it is a good decision from the Indian team management to include Gill in the leadership group as it will prepare him for the future. He also heaped praise on Gill for his exceptional batting talent and revealed he was left impressed after watching Gill in his first net session with Team India.
Gill has gone from strength to strength in the last few years and has established his credentials as one of the best young batters in the present era. Gill, who was awarded the Men’s Cricketer of the Year by BCCI earlier this year, has been named the vice-captain of India’s ODI and T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
He captained India in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe and led the team to a 4-1 victory. Gill finished the series as the highest run-getter of the series with 170 runs at a strike rate of 125.93. He pipped Hardik Pandya in the race to become the vice-captain for the Sri Lanka white-ball tour and will be hoping to make the most of his opportunities in the series.
“I feel captaincy brought the best out of Virat and Rohit and I feel it will do the same for Shubman. Although, he is not yet the captain, being in the leadership group will bring the best out of him as well. This is I am very sure off. When you are in that role, leading others, it gives you that extra bit of responsibility, which is good and I think is great for a young kid like Shubman, who one day might lead India in all three formats,” Rathour was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Shubman Gill knew his game: Rathour
India’s outgoing batting coach Rathour also revealed how he was left awe-struck when he first saw Gill batting in the nets and understood why there was hype around the youngster at the time. Rathour praised Gill for knowing his game inside out and said the batter knew how to adapt in different situations.
“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. When the first time I saw him playing, the immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘whoa this kid is extremely talented’. He knew his game, he understood how he needs to bat in different situations and never shied away from challenges,” said Rathour.
Suryakumar Yadav will be leading India in the T20I series against Sri Lanka while Rohit Sharma will be back in charge of the team in the ODI series. Gill will be serving as the deputy of both on the tour and will be hopeful of leaving a lasting impression on head coach Gautam Gambhir. India’s tour of Sri Lanka will get underway on July 27 with the 1st T20I in Pallekele.
