New Delhi: England batting mainstay Joe Root continued his brilliance with the willow as he recorded his 32nd Test century during the fourth day of the ongoing second Test between England and West Indies on Sunday at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
Continuing from his overnight score of 37 on the third day, Root remained watchful to the exploits of his Yorkshire batting partner Harry Brook from the non-striker’s seat as the latter notched up his fifth Test hundred in his 23rd innings. Root and Brook resurrected England’s innings after they were reduced to 140 for three in the second session on Saturday, the pair stitched 189-run for the fourth wicket before Brook departed on 109.
Root carried on the mantle from here even though England lost the wickets of skipper Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith in the space of two overs. He played a delight cut through the covers off a Kevin Sinclair shorter and wide delivery to move into the 90s.
A sumptuous square drive against a Alzari Joseph fuller lenght ball was sent to the fence as the 33-year-old Root completed his 32nd Test ton. He removed his helmet not before punching the fist in the air and receiving applaud of the crowd at Trent Bridge. Root was later dismissed on 122 after guiding England’s total past 400.

Here’s three important records the Yorkshireman went past with his pulsating knock.
#3 Moved to 8th spot in most Test runs list
Ahead of the Test, Joe Root’s Test tally read 11,804 runs in 141 Tests, ranking him at the 10th spot in the overall list of most run-scorers in Test cricket. Following his first-innings score of 14 and then the magnificent ton, Root surpassed the likes of Mahela Jayawardene (11,814) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (11,867) to move to the eighth spot. The England No.4 has now accumulated 11,940 runs in 142 Tests at 49.96.
#2 Held Joint-8th position for most Test hundreds
Joe Root slammed his 32nd Test century in Nottingham on Sunday, which took the 33-year-old to joint-eighth-most batter for Test centuries. He joined his contemporaries Steve Smith and Kane Williamson’s tally of 32 Test centuries. Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has also accounted for 32 Test hundreds in his illustrious career. Root is one century shy off equalising his former Test captain Alastair Cook’s tally of 33 Test centuries, which will make him the joint-highest holder for England.
#1 Recorded joint-most hundreds in a particular venue in England
Root completed his 19th Test ton on home soil. This was his fifth three-figure mark at Trent Bridge, which takes his tally as the joint-most centuries at a particular venue. He has levelled his count of five centuries at Lord’s in London. The former England skipper has hit three centuries at Edgbaston in Birmingham, while scoring two centuries each at Headlingley in Leeds and The Oval in London. He has hit one century only at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and at Old Trafford in Manchester.
