Former shooter Randhir Singh poised to become first Indian to be Olympic Council of Asia president

New Delhi: Veteran sports administrator Randhir Singh is poised to become the forst Indian to become the president of Olympic Council of Asia.

The former shooter has emerged ad the only candidate for the post in its elections on September 8.

“The OCA election commission can confirm that OCA acting president Randhir Singh is the sole eligible candidate to be nominated for election of the OCA General Assembly on 8 September, 2024,” the OCA said in a statement.

“The Election Committee, chaired by Justice Rohinton Nariman (former judge of Supreme Court of India), met today to review the CVs and eligibility requirements as per OCA Constitution, the Election Rules and Guidelines, of all nominated candidates submitted by Member NOCs of OCA by 21 July 2024 deadline.

“The Committee unanimously approved the nomination of Mr Singh who was nominated by the NOC of India and supported by 27 Member NOCs of OCA.”

Singh is currently the acting chief of the OCA, having earlier been the secretary of Indian Olympic Association. The 77-year-old had also been a member of the International Olympic Council.

He emerged as the sole candidate after Mongolian Olympic Committee Ppresident Battushig Batbold with drew his candidature from the OCA president’s post.

Batbold was deemed ineligible to stand for the election as he didnt fulfill eligibility criteria to be OCA president.

A candidate must be president of his national Olympic committee for a minimum of eight years or must serve as OCA’s executive board member for at least eight years and must get the backing of two NOCs to be eligible to contest the elections.

Singh is the first Indian shooter to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, achieving it in 1978 in Bangkok and has the distinction of competing in five Olympics from 1968 to 1984.
