Shooting icon Abhinav Bindra to receive Olympic Order award from IOC

New Delhi: Former Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra will receive with Olympic Order award from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his notable contribution to the Olympic Movement.

He will be presented with the honour at IOC’s 142nd session in Paris on August 10, a day before conclusion of the Olympics.

“It is with great pleasure that I inform you that the IOC Executive Board has decided to award you with the Olympic Order for your outstanding services to the Olympic Movement,” IOC president Thomas Bach said in a letter written to Bindra on July 20.

The Olympic Order is IOC’s highest honourary award, given to recognise distinguished contributions to the Olympic Movement.

It is awarded as acknowledement of an individual illustrating the Olympic ideal through his/her action, has achieved praiseworthy merit in the sporting world, or has rendered outstanding services to the Olympic cause, either through his own personal achievement or through his contribution for the betterment of sport.

The Olympic Orders Council nominates candidates for the prestigious award, from which IOC’s executive board decides.

“Congratulations to @Abhinav_Bindra on being awarded the Olympic Order for outstanding contributions to the Olympic Movement!,” India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Bindra through social media platofrm X.

“His achievement fills us with pride and is truly well-deserved. His name alone has inspired generations of shooters and Olympians.”

Bindra is the country’s first individual Olympic gold medallist. He won the men’s 10m air rifle event at the Beijing Games in 2008.

The 41-year-old served as the chaor of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) from 2014 to 2020, having been a member of it from 2010, and has been a member of the IOC Athlete Commission since 2018.
