Man suffers sudden cardiac arrest during Zumba session; check expert’s advice on safe workouts

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a man collapsed after suffering a fatal heart attack while performing a Zumba dance exercise at a gym in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The incident was captured on the CCTV footage where the deceased who is identified as Kawaljit Singh Bagga is seen exercising when he begins to feel dizzy and falls on the ground. Following this people near him tried to assist him but his condition rapidly deteriorated. After this, Bagga was rushed to a hospital immediately where he was declared dead on arrival, as per reports.

According to the Mayo Clinic, sudden cardiac arrest is commonly caused due an irregular heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. A rapid, erratic heart signals the lower heart chambers to shake uselessly instead of pumping the blood leading to cardiac arrest.

In conversation with News9, Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, Consultant, Dept of Cardiology at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi explained how sudden cardiac arrest happens while doing an exercise, he said, “Dr Bassler’s observations highlight the critical need for comprehensive pre-exercise evaluations to mitigate the risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), especially in individuals over 35. Before embarking on a high-intensity workout program, it’s crucial to conduct thorough pre-exercise assessments, including a physical examination, a 12-lead ECG, and an exercise stress test for sedentary individuals or those at high risk.”

Risk factors of heart attack

For those with a higher risk profile, advanced imaging techniques such as CT with or without contrast or myocardial perfusion scintigraphy should be considered. According to Dr Gupta, “Medical history plays a pivotal role in this evaluation. It helps identify any underlying congenital, structural, or electrical disorders that may predispose individuals to sudden cardiac events during vigorous exercise. Despite the sports paradox, where intense activity can temporarily increase the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the long-term benefits of habitual exercise far outweigh these risks.”
Regular, moderate aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, is beneficial for cardiovascular health and should be approached with caution but embraced for its extensive health benefits.
