Train passengers beware! Here’s how Indian Railways punishes ticketless travellers

New Delhi: Indian Railways ticketless travel is a punishable offence, according to official rules. The Indian Railways imposes a penalty on passengers seeking to travel on a train without a valid ticket. Under Section 138 of the Railway Act, a passenger is liable to pay the ordinary single fare for the distance travelled or from the origin station with an additional Rs 250 charge. They may also be charged the entire railway ticket fare, subject to which is the higher amount.

Types of penalties charged by Indian Railways

The Indian Railways penalises travellers for multiple offences apart from ticketless travel. These are as follows:

Fraudulent travel is punishable under Section 137 of the Railway Act with 6 months jail, Rs 1,000 fine, or both.
Pulling the alarm chain may result in 12 months in jail or Rs 1,000 fine, or both.
If a passenger travels in a coach reserved for handicapped passengers, they may receive 3 months’ jail, Rs 500 penalty, or both.
Travelling on the rooftop of a train is punishable with 3 months’ jail or a Rs 500 fine, or both.
The Indian Railways punish trespassing with 6 months’ jail or a Rs 1,000 fine, or both.

Bill pasting
Touting
Unauthorised hawking
