Mumbai: Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata is celebrated as the pioneer of Indian civil aviation, and July 29, marks his 120th birth anniversary. Known for being the first licensed pilot in India, he founded Tata Airlines, which later became Air India.

His legacy is marked by significant growth in the Tata group, which expanded from 14 to 95 companies under his leadership, including giants like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tata Motors. He became the chairman of Tata Sons in 1938 and was honoured with two of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna, for his immense contributions to Indian industry.

In 1948, he received the honorary rank of Group Captain from the Indian Air Force and was later promoted to Air Commodore and Air Vice Marshal in 1947. JRD Tata received numerous aviation awards, including the Gold Air Medal from the Federation of Aeronautique International, the Edward Warner Award from the International Civil Aviation Organisation, and the Tony Jannus Award.
