Chennai corporation increases ‘trade licence fee’ for business across spectrum; Full details here

Chennai: The licensing fee for the industrial establishments under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been increased from Wednesday, July 31. The license fee has been revised for various businesses including beauty salons, photo studios, pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, bakeries, shops, factories, and juice shops.

Accordingly, the fee for obtaining business licenses for shops and factories has been increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 30,000.

Chennai Corporation’s revised Trade License Fee

In Chennai, the business license fee for bakeries has been increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 and for beauty salons from Rs 1,500 to Rs 6,000. Rs 1,500 to Rs 10,000 for bicycle shops, Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 for supermarkets, Rs 2,500 to Rs 10,000 for salons, Rs 1,500 to Rs 10,000 for helmet shops, juice shops, pharmacies etc. The license fee has also been increased.

Similarly, the license fee ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 for photo studios, Rs 1,500 to Rs 20,000 for jewelry shops, Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 for cloth shops, and Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 for wedding halls. The resolution has been passed in the meeting of the Municipal Corporation.

Also, according to the revised business tax, there is no business tax for those whose monthly income is up to Rs 21 thousand in 6 months net income. It has been increased from Rs 135 to Rs 180 for those earning between Rs 21,001 – Rs 30,000. Similarly, the business tax has been increased from Rs 315 to Rs 430 for those earning between Rs 30,001 and Rs 45,000. Similarly, the business tax has been increased from Rs 690 to Rs 930 for those earning between Rs 45,001 and Rs 60,000.

Meanwhile, those earning between Rs 60,001 and Rs 75,000 thousand will be charged Rs 1,025 as usual and Rs 1,250 for those earning more than Rs 75,000 as per the old practice. As per the revised business tax, the half-yearly tax has been increased from Rs 45 to Rs 240.

Municipalities and Corporations can determine and collect business tax as per Tamil Nadu Urban Local Government Rules. According to this, in Chennai Corporation, business operators and income-earning individuals have to pay half-yearly business tax to Chennai Corporation based on their half-yearly income.
