Following Google Maps in car, Kasaragod-based youngsters end up in river

Kasaragod: Sending a strong message to all travelers depending solely on google maps to reach their destination, it happened that two youngsters who were on their way to a hospital near Mangalore was directed by the travel app to a wrong direction that ended up the duo in a river. Thanks to a thick plant in the mid of the river, the car got stuck up and didn’t carry away with the stream that was gushing following the heavy rainfall.

The passengers Abdul Rashid and Thashreef who followed the directions shown on Google maps fell into a river early today in Kuttickol in Kasaragod.

As per sources, Rashid who was behind the wheels drove onto a bridge over the Pallanchi river, which lacked barricades and was submerged due to heavy rainfall, they mistook it as a road. Since it was dark outside, the path was not visible and hence leading to the river. The car drifted about 150 meters before getting stuck in a bush. The duo managed to escape by lowering the side windows. Fire force officials reached the spot after the duo informed their relatives.

Fire force along with local residents rescued Rashid and Thashreef, who sustained minor injuries in the accident. Efforts to retrieve the car from the river are ongoing. However, a new, taller bridge was constructed 500 meters from the accident spot four years ago, but Google Maps had reflected the image of the old bridge leading the youngsters to the accident that was avoidable.

“We got a call at 5:49 AM. When we reached the spot, they were holding onto a small tree. We suspect they used the online map service to reach the spot. The cause of the accident may be the lack of a handrail on the bridge and the overflow of the river. The car is still submerged in the river.”, said a fire official in Kuttickol to the media.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour led to water entering the Madhur Temple in Kasaragod. Visuals showed that the water had entered the sanctum sanctorum area and us preventing the believers entering the temple.
