ICC earmarks $70 million budget to organise Champions Trophy in Pakistan

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council has approved a budget of around $70 million to stage the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.

The major tournament is scheduled to be held in February-March will all its slated to be played in Pakistan though a hybrid model could be used if India refuse to travel to their neighbouring country.

India have earlier refused to fly to Pakistan for the Asia Cup last year citing security reasons and have so far refused to confirm their presence, insisting on needing the Indian government’s permission for the trip.

Pakistan expect India to play in their soil but wants the ICC to deliberate over the matter and hasn’t publicly spoken about it in recently.

PTI reports that ICC’s financial and commercial committee, which is headed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, has approved the amount that has been sought by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“The approximate budget is around USD 70 million and only USD 4.5 million has been allocated as additional expenses,” a PCB source told PTI.

Speculation is rife that the ICC has kept additional funds ready should India refuse to play in Pakistan. In that case, matches the tournament will be held in a hybrid model with India’s games shifted to another country, reported to be either UAE or Sri Lanka for which an additional $4.5 million is let ready.

Though that additional amount might not be enough in case a hybrid model is used for the tournament.

Despite late changes due to India denying to play in Pakistan and the tournament adopting a hybrid model to conduct its matches, the ACC still made profit from the Asia Cup.
