‘Demand swift justice, strict punishment’: KTR on recent spate of rapes in Telangana

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao raised alarm over the rising spate of sexual assaults on women in the state recently.

Taking to his social media platform X, he wrote, that in just 48 hours, four heinous incidents occurred, including gang rapes and assaults. “These gruesome acts highlight a severe lack of security for women and a deteriorating law and order situation in the state.”

He further stated that even after eight months, the state does not have a home minister, and the increase in crime is a direct result of that. “The horrific incidents in Vanasthalipuram, Shaligouraram, Nirmal, and Puppalaguda demand urgent action. We demand swift justice, strict punishments for the culprits, and immediate government action to ensure women’s safety.”

What are the assault cases?

In Vanasthalipuram, a young dalit software professional was gang-raped by two men, who invited her to a party on the pretext of celebrating her new job at Amazon. The men reportedly got her drunk and raped her when she was in unconscious state. The main accused Goutham Reddy was arrested while a second accused is on the run.

Another woman was raped on a moving bus by a spare driver of a private bus company, Harikrishna Travels. The main driver of the bus, reportedly helped his co-driver escape, police said. The main driver is in police custody.

In a third incident, a director named Siddharth Varma, working in Telugu film industry, assaulted a woman techie after promising her a role in his film. He was arrested after the victim filed a complaint at Gachibowli police station.

In another incident, Telangana High Court confirmed death penalty to a 30-year-old man who kidnapped, raped and killed a 5-year-old girl in Narsingi on the outskirts of the city.
