New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team will take on Great Britain in the Paris Olympics 2024 quarter-finals at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in Colombes on Sunday. It is surely going to be an exciting encounter for a quarterfinal as the two teams have shown great fieldwork in their respective campaigns so far and will fight tooth and nail for a berth in the semifinals.
India, placed in Pool B, finished second after the completion of the group stage, securing 10 points in five matches. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side started off with a 3-2 win against New Zealand and followed it up with a 2-0 win over Ireland. They held on to a 1-1 draw against Argentina and were downed 2-1 by a robust Belgium team. The Indian team ended their group stage with a historic 3-2 win over Australia after a long wait of 52 years at the Olympics.
Great Britain on the other hand finished third in the Pool A standings with eight points in five matches. The David Ames-led side won against France and Spain, drew with the Netherlands and South Africa, and lost its last fixture against World champion Germany. They had finished fifth in the Tokyo Olympics while India bagged a bronze.
India had notably lost to Great Britain in their last two meetings in the FIH Pro League in London a couple of months back. But the Craig Fulton-coached outfit looks quite different in the ongoing marquee event with skipper Harmanpreet Singh reigning in form. He has hit six goals so far and is currently the second-highest scorer in the tournament. He is expected to extend his tally in the knockout clash.
