New Delhi: Sweden’s Armand Duplantis shattered his own world record to defend his Olympic pole vault title in Paris. Like a true showman, Duplantis drew rapturous applause from a 69,000-capacity crowd at Stade de France after sailing over the bar raised to 6.25 metres. The mark bettered his own previous best of 6.24m set at the Xiamen Diamond League meet in April by 1cm.
US-born Swede, astonishingly, has now broken the record on nine occasions.
American Sam Kendricks claimed silver with a best of 5.95m while Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis took bronze (5.90) on countback.
Courtesy of the Paris gold, Duplantis became the first man to defend the pole vault title since American Bob Richards in 1952 and 1956.

Duplantis kisses girlfriend, punches teammates and mimics Turkey’s Yusuf Dikec
Following the landmark win, Duplantis broke into a wild celebration, sprinting over to the stands and kissing his girlfriend, Swedish model Desire Inglander. Excitedly, he also embraced his Swedish teammates and exchanged celebratory punches.

The legendary Swedish athlete then mimicked Turkey’s silver medallist shooter Yusuf Dikec, who topped the trends for several days after winning an Olympic medal without wearing any protective gear.
