Dhaka: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, has urged India to arrest former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana following the former’s resignation as the situation in Bangladesh worsens.
Addressing the press conference held at the SCBA auditorium, Khokon said, “We want to maintain a positive relationship with the people of India. Please arrest Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who fled the country, and send them back to Bangladesh.”
He further accused the former PM of causing several deaths in Bangladesh, saying, “Sheikh Hasina has killed many people in Bangladesh.”
Furthermore, Khokon who is also a joint secretary of pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawyers at the conference urged against declaring a state of emergency and demanded the resignations of Supreme Court judges involved in political activities and corruption within a week across the country, ANI reported quoting Dhaka Tribune.
The leader also urged for the resignations of state law officers, including Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, and the heads and officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), appointed by the Hasina-led government.
The leader also demanded the release of political prisoners.
This comes as Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the head of Bangladesh‘s interim government, the President’s Press Secretary informed on Tuesday.
Student leaders who organised the protests want Yunus, who is currently in Paris for the Olympics, to head an interim government. He could not immediately be reached for comment, but one student leader said Yunus has agreed to step in.
Yunus, 83, is a well-known critic and opponent of Hasina. He called her resignation the country’s “second liberation day.”
‘She Has Not Made Any Request For Asylum’: Sheikh Hasina‘s Son To Republic
Sheikh Hasina, who resigned as Bangladesh‘s prime minister amid weeks of protests, has not sought asylum, her US-based son and former Chief Advisor Sajeeb Wajed Joy told Republic Media Network’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
“My mother Sheikh Hasina has not made any request for asylum, Joy said.
Joy’s remarks come following reports suggesting that Sheikh Hasina requested political asylum in the United Kingdom. However, her plans to seek shelter in Britain have hit several roadblocks.
Hasina is presently in India after she requested approval at short notice amid unrest in Bangladesh.
