New Delhi: Wondering if your child needs glasses? Whenever we hear about reading glasses we always think it may come with age but what’s the reality? Good eyesight is essential for all aspects of life like reading, writing, playing, walking, driving, and other tasks. Dr Sakshi Lalwani, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Bandra shared with News9, “It’s important for parents and caregivers to recognise the signs that a child may need glasses.”

Here are some common indicators that a child might be struggling with their vision:

1. Poor concentration: Children who frequently lose focus or have trouble concentrating on tasks may be experiencing vision problems.

2. Poor scholastic performance: Poor performance in school can sometimes be linked to unaddressed vision issues.

3. Excessive eye rubbing: If a child is often rubbing their eyes, it could be a sign of visual discomfort or strain.

4. Squinting eyes: Children who squint or narrow their eyes to see better may need an eye examination. Regular squinting, whether occasional or constant, can indicate vision difficulties.

6. Maintaining a head posture: Holding the head at odd angles while reading or viewing objects from a distance might suggest a vision problem.

7. Complaining of frequent headaches: Persistent headaches can sometimes be a symptom of eye strain or vision issues.

8. Eye Pain and Nausea: Complaints of eye pain accompanied by headaches or nausea should not be ignored, as they can signal visual strain.

9. Recent behavioural changes, excessive irritability: Sudden irritability or behavioral changes may be linked to discomfort or frustration from poor vision.

10. Proximity to Screens or Books: Standing too close to the TV or holding books unusually close can indicate difficulty seeing clearly.

11. Struggles in Copying from the Blackboard: If a child is making mistakes while copying from the board and resists changing their seating position, they might be experiencing vision issues. Children with a strong family history of any ocular disease must have an annual eye examination
