International news for school assembly

Following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh amid violent student protests demanding job quotas for the children of freedom fighters, twenty bodies of Awami League leaders have been discovered across the country. The violence has also targeted Hindu communities. The Dhaka Tribune has reported extensive vandalism and looting of homes and businesses belonging to Awami League leaders and activists throughout Bangladesh.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s removal amid widespread protests, Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate in microfinance, Muhammad Yunus, has been appointed as the head of the military-backed interim government.
A Pakistani citizen has been charged in a complex and dramatic plot to assassinate Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. US Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed the charges against Asif Merchant on Tuesday, confirming that Trump was the intended target, though he did not name him directly.Garland noted that the Justice Department has been actively working to thwart Iran’s persistent attempts to retaliate against American officials for the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Trump, who was President at the time, authorised the killing of Soleimani in Baghdad in 2020, linking the assassination plot to him.
Following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister, violent mobs in Bangladesh have attacked numerous Hindu temples, businesses, and community centres, according to a local community association. Despite appeals from the leaders of the movement that removed the Awami League government urging people not to target the Hindu minority, there are growing concerns for their safety. On a positive note, there has been support for the Hindu community, with some temples being protected by both Muslims and Hindus working together. Hindus make up about 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million population, and many in this community have historically supported Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League due to its strong ties with India and its secular stance, in contrast to the more hardline opposition. As the new government has yet to assume power, mobs continue to wreak havoc, targeting police stations, prisons, Awami League leaders’ homes, and Hindu establishments.
Former US President Donald Trump has revealed that he will be interviewed by billionaire CEO and entrepreneur Elon Musk next week. Recently, Trump was interviewed at his Mar-a-Lago residence by live streamer Adin Ross.
