New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey team clinched a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday after beating Spain 2-1. It was India’s 13th medal overall and fourth bronze in the history of the Olympics as they have a grand total of eight gold medals and one silver.

The Men in Blue gave a perfect farewell to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who was playing his last international match and his fourth Olympics. India lost 2-3 to Germany in the semifinals and were forced to play the bronze medal match against the Spanish side, which was beaten by Netherlands 4-0 in the semifinal contest.

How much cash prize has Hockey India announced?

Hockey India announced a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh each for the players and Rs 7.5 lakh each for the support staff of the national men’s team that won a second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympic Games. In a social media post, the HI confirmed the same.

“Hockey India announces cash prize of Rs 15 lakh each for all the players and Rs 7.5 lakh each for the support staff for their bronze medal winning performance at the Paris Olympics,” Hockey India said in a social media post on Thursday.

How the match panned out

Meanwhile, it was for the first time since 1972 that India have clinched consecutive Olympic bronze medals in men’s hockey. India had broken a 41-year medal jinx at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a bronze. Spain started off the proceedings and scored the opening goal in the 18th minute of the contest to take an early lead. India, who were watchful in the beginning, came back roaring with skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s two goals in the 30th and 33rd minute to bag the contest. The Harmanpreet-led side showed nerves of steel in the final quarter of the game and kept Spain at bay.
