New Delhi: Manchester United seem to start yet another season with bouts of injury as their manager, Erik Ten Hag, now faces a selection conundrum regarding how many defenders are available before the first Community Shield game against Manchester City. However, Lisandro Martinez returned to training, having rested after the Copa America win with Argentina.
It has been reported that Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are doubtful of their participation in the game, while their new signing, Leny Yoro, has been ruled out for three months after picking up a foot injury during Man United’s defeat against Arsenal. He is now expected to return in late October or early November.
Ten Hag said recently that Magurie had missed United’s game against Liverpool as a precaution but was still doubtful for Sunday’s participation. Maguire has been recovering from a calf injury and was sidelined during England’s European Championship, and his participation will depend on his performance during training. Ten Hag mentioned that all four players were doubtful of their performance in the upcoming game.

Now, Ten Hag will have to decide if he can risk taking a squad with probable injury scares or take a team slightly less strong. He, though, has the service of the veteran Jonny Evans and highly skilled Diogo Dalot. The Man United coach could opt for the youngster Rhys Bennett and Harry Amass to form his defence at Wembley. With players returning to the training camp after major tournaments, Ten Hag will have to assess each player as to how each can fit.
Man United will be worried about their injury status as last season, injuries were the reason behind the club’s inconsistent performance. Injuries had made the squad so weak that they had conceded 58 goals from 38 Premier League games and finished with a negative goal difference. At the start of the season, Ten Hag had mentioned that this season would be the “survival of the fittest”, and the support staff and medical personnel of the team need to be extra cautious with treating players given that there are more games this season than ever. Ten Hag had mentioned that for injuries to not cause hindrance in the team’s performance, they needed a chunk of quality players who could easily replace any player out with injury.
