New Delhi: The 216th edition of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden’s bi-annual Flower Show has commenced, showcasing its splendour as part of the run-up to Independence Day celebrations. This year’s theme honours the eminent scientist and architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna. A magnificent floral replica of the Parliament, towering at 32 feet high and 36 feet wide, stands alongside a 12-foot statue of Dr Ambedkar, welcoming visitors at the entrance. The grand installation is crafted from over 3 lakh roses and 2 lakh chrysanthemums.

The flower show pays tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s immense contribution to Indian history, particularly his role in drafting the Constitution, with a remarkable display of 27 lakh flowers, including nine lakh cut varieties. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the history and timeline of Dr Ambedkar’s life, with replicas of significant locations, from his birthplace to his cremation site, providing a detailed account of his legacy.

Entry: ₹80 for adults and ₹30 for children on weekdays, ₹100 for adults and ₹30 for children on weekends.

More than 85 varieties of flowers are on display, including zinnias, petunias, marigolds, roses, cornflowers, impatiens, and hill balsams. Additionally, blooms such as pinks, phlox, cosmos, cockscomb, and curcuma from Pune are featured, along with 27 temperate species from Ooty’s Karnataka Siri Horticulture Garden, including hot pokers, tuberous-rooted begonias, cydonia, azaleas, and fuchsias.

The event, which drew over 32,000 visitors on its first day, is expected to attract around 12 lakh attendees by the time it concludes on August 19. This year’s show is also committed to being a waste-free event, with initiatives like BYOC (Bring Your Own Container) and efforts to raise anti-littering awareness among visitors.
