The rapid advancement of digital technologies is reshaping our world, presenting unprecedented opportunities to propel sustainable development forward and inspire hope for a better future.
Mobile devices, services, and artificial intelligence are crucial in driving progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data derived from digital interactions empowers evidence-based decision-making. With far-reaching implications across economic, social, and environmental realms, digital technologies and data are estimated to contribute to at least 70 per cent of the targets outlined in the SDGs, potentially reducing the cost of achieving these goals by up to USD 55 trillion.
Young people, often called ‘digital natives,’ are at the forefront of embracing digital technologies and spearheading innovative initiatives. In 2022, three-quarters of individuals aged 15 to 24 used the internet, surpassing other age groups in adoption rates.
However, disparities persist, particularly in low-income nations and among young women, who frequently have limited access to the internet and digital skills compared to their male counterparts.
Despite these challenges, the role of young people as ‘digital natives’ is widely acknowledged. They are not just utilising technology but also instigating change and devising solutions. As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs draws near, their pivotal role in driving digital innovation is indispensable for addressing global challenges and empowering them to shape the future.
Celebrating the digital contributions of youth is not just a formality but also a powerful tool to inspire further innovation and foster collaborative efforts toward advancing sustainable development.

Globally, the representation of individuals under 30 in parliamentary roles could be much higher, at a mere 2.6 per cent. Alarmingly, the proportion of women within this demographic is even lower, at less than 1 per cent.
