New Delhi: Nico Williams seems ready to stay at the San Mames after switching his jersey at Athletic Bilbao. The Catalan giants have had their eye on the Spanish winger for the most of the summer, and at one point, a deal was apparently almost finalized. Williams had an exceptional La Liga season, in the colors of the team he grew up supporting, tallying five goals and dishing out eleven assists over 31 league games for the Bilbao in 2023–2024. With two goals and an assist as La Roja won the Euros this summer, the Spaniard maintained his excellent form with the national squad.
This summer, Athletic Bilbao hope to hang on to their top attacker, who was given a contract extension for the 2023–24 campaign. In addition, the 22-year-old received an upgrade from his former number 11 jersey to the number 10 shirt for the 2024–25 season from the Basque club.

Williams recently took over as the number 10 at the San Mames as the club’s iconic veteran and former captain Iker Muniain left a few weeks back. Muniain truly had a wonderful career at Athletic Bilbao, a club which became his home as he spent his entire professional career there. The 32-year-old is allegedly ready to sign a free agency contract with the Argentine giants, River Plate.
Muniain played 560 senior games for Athletic Bilbao, where he provided 70 assists and also scored 76 goals throughout his career. During his last season with the team, the winger took home two Spanish Super Cups and the Copa del Rey. Barcelona remain interested in signing Nico Williams, as the Spaniard has been their top most priority this summer and the Spaniard has also shown his interest in a move. However, this might be a hint that the winger is staying at San Mames, after he accepted the number 10 jersey.
