New Delhi: Newly-crowned Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem spoke on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day, asking his fellow countrymen to unite.
Nadeem became the first individual athlete from Pakistan to win an Olympic gold medal.
He set an Olympic javelin record of 92.93m to win the gold, dethroning India’s Neeraj Chopra, who came in second, ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters.
The 27-year-old gifted their first Olympic medal since 1992 Games, which had led to a showering of gifts on him since he returned to Pakistan.
In his Independence Day speech on Wednesday, Nadeem said: “On Pakistan’s Independence Day, I appeal to the people of Pakistan to take a pledge on this day that we stay united,” Nadeem ssaid in a video.
“Like how on August 8th after I bagged gold at the Paris Olympics we witnessed a wave of joy not only in Pakistan but among Pakistanis worldwide. I wish you stand by me and, like how I have changed my profile pictures on social media for August 14 stating ‘United we stand,’ I want all of you to stand with me and change your profile pictures. Let’s show the world that ‘United we stand.’”
But his passionate appeal was overshadowed by a loud snore hat could be heard in the background, which left the netizens in splits, leading to humorous comments.
Realising the gaffe, Nadeem deleted the video and posted a new one without any snoring noise, which added to the reations on social media.

Before flying to the country’s administrative capital, Nadeem received a car and a cheque of 100 million Pakistani rupees (Rs 30 lakh) from Punjab province’s Chief Minister Mariam Nawaz, who visited hos house in a village in Mian Channu’s district.
The car presented to him will have a special registration number of “PAK 92.97” to mark Nadeem’s gold medal winning throw at Paris Olympics.
