Spencer Johnson’s pain is Sean Abbott’s gain in Australia squad for England tour

New Delhi: All-rounder Sean Abbott will replace pacer Spencer Johnson in the Australian squad for their T20 series against England and Scotland from next month.

A side strain has ruled Johnson out, Cricket Australia confirmed on Thursday. Left arm pacer Johnson was injured in The Hundred competition, while playing for The Oval Invincibles.

The 28-year-old would now fly back for more assessment of his injury and subsequent rehabilitation, the CA said in a statement.

In his fledgling career, Johnson has played in five T20Is and one ODI so far. He claimed 19 wickets at an average of 14.47 in last edition of the Big Bash League, which earned him a Rs 10 crore deal from Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League auction.

With Australia set for a busy schedule beginning in November with ODIs and T20Is against Pakistan and five Test matches against India, Johnson is expected to play a crucial role in these crunch series’.

Australia are already be without skipper Pat Cummins and premier pacer Mitchell Starc for the three-match T20 series against England and Scotland.

The duo have been rested with Mitchell Marsh leading both white-ball teams in the series that begins on September 4 with three T20Is against Scotland, to be played in Edinburgh.

Australia then take on England in three T20Is followed by five ODIs.
