New Delhi: Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made a brilliant debut for Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the One Day Cup, a 50-over domestic white-ball tournament in England. Chahal took five wickets and bowled five maidens in his 10 overs spell.
Chahal decimated Kent’s batting line-up to bundle them out for 82 runs in 35.1 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal bowled with great discipline and got the wicket of Jaydn Denly and Beyers Swanepoel on LBW. After that Chahal dismissed middle-order batter Ekansh Singh while Grant Stewart and Nathan Gilchrist were caught.
Chasing the target of 83 runs, the visitors got the job done easily in just 14 overs. Northamptonshire lost their last six matches and failed to book the quarterfinal berth. They finished eighth in the nine-team Group A.
After the One-Day Cup match, Chahal will also play five matches in the County Championship Division Two for Northamptonshire. The club announced the signing of Chahal just a few hours before their match against Kent. He joined Prithvi Shaw at the club. The Indian opener is in great form and has scored 344 runs in eight matches. Ajinkya Rahane is also playing for Leicestershire in the one-day cup.
Chahal is aiming to make a comeback in the Indian Cricket team as he was ignored for the Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka series. He was part of the T20 World Cup 2024 winning team but didn’t get a chance to play any match.
