IndiGo’s growing women pilot fleet: Breaking barriers in aviation

New Delhi: IndiGo is planning to induct more women pilots in its workforce and increase the number to over 1,000 in the next year. The country’s largest airline’s decision to expand its women pilots workforce to boost diversity and inclusivity. The low cost airline currently has over 800 women pilots.

Sukhjit S Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, said the airline is aggressively working towards inclusiveness by working in every area.

“In every work area, we are driving diversity and inclusivity. We have a 360-degree approach to it… we have grown by about 30 per cent in terms of women in engineering overall,” he told PTI.

The IndiGo official said the airline has the highest number of women pilots in the Indian market. The low cost airline has around 14 per cent women pilots, while the global average is 7-9 per cent.

“We will cross the number of 1,000 women pilots in one year (by August 2025),” Pasricha said.

IndiGo operates more than 2,000 flights daily and has over 5,000 pilots on its payroll. The financial report of IndiGo as of March 31, 2024 mentioned that the airline had 36,860 permanent employees, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew. There were 713 women pilots.

On the occasion of Independence Day, the airline inducted 77 women pilots for its Airbus and ATR planes on August 15, 2024. IndiGo has also hired from the LGBTQ segment.

The 2023-24 annual report of IndiGo informed that the airline had an overall female representation of 44 per cent and female leadership at 18 per cent as of March 31, 2024. In an attempt to keep up with the IATA’s ’25 by 2025′ initiative, IndiGo is targeting to have 25 per cent female leadership and 50 per cent female representation in our overall workforce in IndiGo.
