New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has dismissed the rumours of requesting BCCI to treat MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. Earlier, there were reports that CSK wants BCCI to reinstate the uncapped player rule as the franchise is keen to retain the legendary cricketer as an uncapped player.
As per the rule, players who retired from international cricket five or more years ago can be termed as uncapped players but the board scrapped the rule in 2021. The BCCI is also reportedly considering reintroduction of the rule in the upcoming IPL season.
The CSK CEO denied all the reports and said that the franchise has not requested BCCI and the board has told them about the rule.
“I’ve no idea about it. We’ve not requested for it. They (the BCCI) have themselves told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all. They (the BCCI) haven’t announced anything as yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI,” Viswanath told the Times of India.
Dhoni stepped down from CSK’s captaincy before the start of the IPL 2024 and passed the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad. He came to bat lower down the order in the IPL 2024 and scored 161 runs at an average of 53.66 with an explosive strike rate of 220.54. He also smashed 13 maximums during the season.
CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs after RCB defeated them in the last league match and many fans expected that the five-time IPL-winning captain would announce his retirement.
‘I will take a call after rules get formalised’: MS Dhoni
In an event, MS Dhoni said that there is a lot of time to decide his IPL future as they have to see how many players the franchise can retain ahead of the auction.
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team” Dhoni said at an event.
