‘Meri behen ne mujhe bohot mara’: When Virat Kohli recalled getting thrashed by his elder sister

New Delhi: Raksha Bandhan is a festival of happiness and joy. The festival is marked to celebrate the ever-lasting bond between a brother and sister. Raksha Bandhan 2024 is being celebrated on August 19 with celebrations across the nation. Some of the popular Indian cricketers also share special bonds with their sisters and will be celebrating the festival with their families.

Team India superstar Virat Kohli too shares a great bond with his elder sister Bhawna Kohli, who has been one of his strongest supporters throughout his cricketing journey. Kohli is known for his fiery nature on the field and never shies away from picking up a fight on the field against the opposition. However, off the field, Kohli remains compassionate and likes his own space.

Kohli once revealed a hilarious anecdote from his childhood involving his elder sister, who thrashed him over one of his bad habits. During a chat with former Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri, Kohli recalled how he had a bad habit of addressing everyone with ‘tu’, a term which is usually used with someone younger or equal in Hindi.

Kohli revealed he used to use ‘tu’ when talking to his elder sister Bhawna as well. However, that ended up backfiring badly as his sister lost patience one day and gave him a beating over his habit. Kohli hilariously admitted he has since stopped using ‘tu’ word for anyone, let alone his sister. Kohli’s hilarious revelation had left the internet in splits at the time.

“Meri behen ne mujhe bohot maara, bohot maara, bohot maara hai. Main na tu karke baat karta tha, aisehi merko aadat thi, merko tu karke baat karne ki. Pata nahi, ek din didi ko pata nahi kya gussa chadh gaya, tab aisa maara mujhe, Ta nikalna hi bandh ho gaya muhn se, ‘aap’ nikalta tha, ‘aap kaise ho, aap kya kar rahe ho’. (My sister has beaten me a lot. I used to address her casually by saying ‘tu,’ it was a habit of mine, I used to talk to everyone with ‘tu’. I don’t know what happened to my sister one day, she got angry and she thrashed me so badly that, I stopped saying ‘tu’ and started saying ‘aap’),” Kohli told Cheetri during a conversation with him.

Kohli’s story of his sister’s retaliation and his playful personality resonated well with the fans, who gushed over the bond between the two siblings. The senior India batter’s elder sister played an important role in helping him realise his dream of becoming a cricketer by being a rock beside him throughout his journey.

Virat Kohli celebrated with his sister and family after T20 World Cup win
