New Delhi: The legendary MS Dhoni is arguably one of India’s most successful captains of all time. Dhoni transformed India into winners both at home and away from home under his talismanic leadership and led the Men in Blue to numerous memorable triumphs across formats. He remains the only Indian captain to have won all three major limited-overs ICC trophies.
Rohit Sharma, who made his debut under Dhoni’s captaincy, is currently India’s captain in Tests and ODIs. Rohit is the only captain apart from Dhoni to have led India to a T20 World Cup victory. While India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 under Dhoni’s captaincy, the Men in Blue clinched their second T20 World Cup title under Rohit earlier this year.
It was Dhoni who decided to promote Rohit as an opener in the Champions Trophy 2013, a decision that worked wonders for the current India skipper and gave his career a new lease of life. Rohit has since not only established his credentials as one of the best opening batters in white-ball cricket but has also done exceptionally well for India as captain.
The Hitman, who took over as India’s all-format captain from Virat Kohli in 2022, has since led the team to a T20 World Cup title and two finals in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the World Test Championship (WTC) last year. While he is far from matching Dhoni’s feats as captain overall, Rohit has left the former India captain behind in T20Is.
Rohit or Dhoni: Who has most wins as captain in T20Is?
Rohit and Dhoni are two of India’s most successful captains in T20Is. However, Rohit is ahead of Dhoni in terms of most wins as captain in the shortest format. Rohit has an impressive 50 wins and 12 defeats in 12 matches as captain while Dhoni finished his career with 41 wins and 28 losses in 72 matches.
Rohit is the only captain to have won 50 matches as captain in T20Is and at 37 he was the oldest to lift the T20 World Cup trophy as captain. Rohit also won the T20 World Cup 2024 title undefeated, etching his name in history.
