New Delhi: Janmashtami, one of the most significant celebrations in Hinduism, marks the birthday of Lord Krishna. It’s a festival of vibrant colours, devotional fervour, and grand festivities that bring devotees together to relive the divine stories of Krishna. Delhi, a city that offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, becomes the epicentre of special Janmashtami celebrations each year, especially in its numerous Krishna temples.
Krishna temples to visit in Delhi
ISKCON Temple (Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Temple): As one of the most prominent Krishna temples in Delhi, the ISKCON Temple in the East of Kailash becomes a hub of activity during Janmashtami in Delhi. The temple is adorned with lights and flowers, and the celebrations include kirtans, theatrical performances, and the famous Abhishek ceremony. Devotees fast throughout the day, breaking it at midnight, marking Krishna’s birth with joyous chanting and dancing.
Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarakadhish Temple: Prominently known as ISKCON Dwarka Delhi, the presiding Deities at the temple are Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai, Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarkadhish and Sri Sri Jagannath Baldev Subadhara Maharani. The grand temple in Dwarka, Delhi, is set for a grand Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebration, expecting around 5 lakh devotees. This year’s highlights include the offering of 1 lakh special bhogs to the deity—a first for ISKCON Dwarka—and a 100 kg cake to be distributed as Mahabhog Prasad. A large waterproof tent, accommodating 41,000 devotees, is being erected. The two-day festival, on September 6th and 7th, will feature cultural programs by local students.
Birla Mandir: Also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple, Birla Mandir is another iconic site for Janmashtami celebrations in Delhi. This beautiful temple, located near Connaught Place, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi, with an entire section devoted to Krishna. The temple comes alive during the festival with hymns, bhajans, and religious discourses.
Shri Jagannath Temple: While primarily dedicated to Lord Jagannath, this temple in Hauz Khas is a key destination for Janmashtami in Delhi. The temple is beautifully decorated for the occasion, and the atmosphere resonates with chants and devotional songs. The cultural programs here are a blend of traditional and modern performances, attracting both locals and tourists. Midnight aarti and the offering of traditional sweets to the deity are key highlights of the festival.
