Govt bans 156 drug combos, including Paracetamol and Cetirizine; multivitamins under review

New Delhi: In view to make public health a safer and more convenient place for patients, the Indian government has banned around 156 combinations of drugs that are often given as painkillers, multivitamins and antibiotics that are mainly used for fever or colds and others.  Apart from the 156 drugs, the government of India is also reviewing 34 more multivitamins, as per media reports. These drugs have been banned over safety concerns.

The government in a gazette notification dated August 21, 2024, the government stated that the use of the drugs Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) of Amylase, Protease, Glucoamylase, Pectinase, Alpha Galactosidase, Lactase, Beta-Gluconase, Cellulase, Lipase, Bromelain, Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Malt diastase, Invertase, Papain are some of the drugs those are likely to involve dangers to human beings on the other hand the safer alternatives to the said drugs are still available.

Such drugs are also known as cocktail drugs because these medicines are combined in more than one drug in a single pill are FDC drugs.

Why did the government take such a step?

A group of experts appointed by the Central Government examined the matter which led the government to take such a step. The expert committee considered the administration of FDC as ‘irrational’. The Drug Technical Advisory Board also examined the said FDC and suggested that ‘there is no therapeutic justification for the ingredients contained in this FDC. The FDC may lead to dangers to human beings. Therefore, for larger public interest it is imperative to ban the manufacturing, sale or distribution of this FDC under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940.

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, any kind of restrictions or rules to allow for any use in patients is not justifiable, according to the notification. The list of banned drugs also includes drugs used for hair treatments, anti-parasitic, skincare, and anti-allergic.

Multivitamins that are under review

According to the sources, a total of 34 multivitamins are under evaluation based on reviews. These multivitamins include, Mefenamic Acid and Paracetamol Injection is likely to pose a danger to human beings and is restricted.
