New Delhi: Young Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has left for Austria on Sunday to strengthen his body ahead of the BWF tournaments in the rest of the calendar year, coach Vimal Kumar confirmed the development.
Following his fourth-place finish in the men’s singles event at the Paris Olympics, Lakshya returned to his base at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru on August 11. The 22-year-old will now undergo a series of tests at the Red Bull Athlete Performance Centre in Salzburg to be in a good shape regarding his fitness standards for his upcoming tournaments.
He will be joined by his trainer Gaurav and Nishchal Chand, a promising 15-year-old talent from Uttarakhand to help him for training sessions on the board.
“Lakshya is going to Austria to do some physical assessment. There is a good sports institute there, where he wants to do some physical exercise. He left today and will be back after a week,” Vimal told news agency PTI.
“The tests will focus basically on specific strength aspects. Many of the elite athletes go and get themselves tested there. We had consulted Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala for all his niggles and injuries.
“Right now, he is fine but before he really starts going full-fledged, it is important for him to get the right physical training, and unless the strength and conditioning program is really spot on, he can get injuries. So we have to find the right things to do,” Lakshya’s childhood coach added.
When will Lakshya Sen play his next tournament?
Lakshya had a great opportunity to become the first Olympics medallist from India in men’s singles. He got not one but two chances to finish on the podium. However, the youngster couldn’t execute his plans in the big games against World No.1 Viktor Axerlsen (in semifinals) and Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia (in bronze medal playoff).
He is likely to play the Hong Kong Super 500 and China Open Super 1000 next in late September this year, though the official confirmation is awaited.
