This is likely to contribute to a future wherein the Y chromosome may no longer exist as it is continuously losing genes that are not a must for survival. However, as per a 2022 study, humans may evolve a new male-determining gene which can offer hope for survival citing face of Y chromosome decline.
What is the Y chromosome?
The Y chromosome plays a key role in determining the male sex and its traits. It carries the SRY gene, which triggers the formation of male characteristics by triggering the formation of male hormones and testes. This sets males apart from females as the latter has two X chromosomes. The Y chromosome is unique because it is passed on from a father to a son.
