Federico Chiesa to Liverpool: Juventus outcast close to sealing a surprise Premier League switch

New Delhi: Liverpool are set to complete the signing of 26-year-old Italian winger Federico Chiesa from Italian outfit Juventus, after reaching an agreement with both the club and the player. Arne Slot’s side have reached an agreement with the Old Lady for a measly fee of €13 million initially, but the fee could rise slightly higher on the completion of some add-ons.

Chiesa had been left out of Juventus’ plans for the new season after new manager Thiago Motta had deemed the player surplus to requirements. Since being ousted from the squad, the winger was linked with a move away from the club with the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona looking at him. He was even interested in a potential switch to Barcelona but Liverpool came in the equation on Monday and have now seemingly swept him away.

He had only a year remaining on his contract with the Old Lady and the club were looking to cash in on the winger this summer, rather than seeing him walk out on a free next year. Italian clubs like Inter Milan and AS Roma were exploring the possibility of signing the UEFA Euro 2020 winner on a free next summer but that is no longer a possibility for either of those clubs now.

Chiesa has been an important player for Juventus during his stay in Turin but his career has been hampered by injuries in the past few seasons. He suffered a horrible ACL injury in January 2022, which meant he could only play 18 games for the club in the 2021/22 season and 33 games in the 2022/23 season, playing less than 1000 minutes in the Serie A in both of these campaigns.

Last season was a much better one for the winger as he managed to stay fit for almost the entire season. He played 37 games in a season where Juventus had no European football to compete for and took part in 33 out of their 38 games in the Serie A. In those 37 games, he contributed to 13 goals all season and finished as the club’s second-highest goalscorer, behind only Dusan Vlahovic.

Juventus took some harsh decisions following the arrival of Motta and released a list of players that weren’t going to be included in their plans for the new season and Chiesa’s name stood out the most. Others mentioned on that list were,  Filip Kostic, Weston McKennie, Arkadiusz Milik, Arthur Melo, Mattia De Sciglio, Daniele Rugani and the recently retired Wojciech Szczęsny.

Chiesa’s imminent move to Liverpool makes him the first player to be added to Arne Slot’s squad for this new season and he becomes the Dutchman’s second signing at Anfield. Liverpool just wrapped up a move for Valencia’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili but the Georgian will remain on loan at Valencia this season and will join the Liverpool squad in the summer of 2025, before the start of next season.

Juventus’ Italian winger Federico Chiesa is set to become the first addition to Arne Slot’s squad this season having been ousted by the Old Lady.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
