US Open 2024: Carlos Alcaraz slumps to shock loss against Botic van de Zandschulp

New Delhi: Botic van de Zandschulp defeated Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the US on Friday, August 30. The Spaniard conceded 27 unforced errors as his tournament ended far earlier than expected.

The World No. 74 in the PIF ATP Rankings hit the ball with confidence and unsettled the Spaniard’s usual baseline rhythm. The Dutchman secured the biggest win of his career by beating the world no.3.

Alcaraz was aiming to become just the third player in the Open Era to win the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season but was defeated in straight sets. The 21-year-old was the favourite to win but his opponent from the Netherlands came out all guns blazing and pulled off a massive upset.
