How Suryakumar Yadav’s latest injury scare can shatter his hopes of making Test comeback for India

New Delhi: Suryakumar’s dreams of making a Test comeback for Team India have hit a massive roadblock as his participation in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25 is in doubt after sustaining an injury scare during the Buchi Babu Trophy. Suryakumar suffered a hand injury while fielding during the match between Mumbai and TNCA XI in the Buchi Babu Trophy.

The injury can derail his hopes of making his Test comeback as he might have to miss the Duleep Trophy to recover. As per a report in Times of India, India’s T20I skipper checked in at the NCA for further assessment after sustaining an injury to his right thumb. With the Duleep Trophy set to get underway on September 05, Surykumar’s participation looks uncertain.

The Duleep Trophy is an important tournament for the star Indian batter, who recently made his aspirations clear about playing Test cricket for India again. The prolific right-hander was hoping to stake a claim for a spot in India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh with his performances in the Duleep Trophy.

However, his participation in the domestic red-ball tournament is in doubt. Suryakumar is part of Team C for the Duleep Trophy which will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Team C has already been dealt with an injury blow with pacer Umran Malik set to miss the first round. Suryakumar’s injury will further deplete their strength ahead of the start of the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in Buchi Babu Trophy

Suryakumar endured a disappointing outing for Sarfaraz Khan-led Mumbai against the TNCA XI in the Buchi Babu Trophy. The right-hander, who is known for his swashbuckling style of batting in T20Is, managed only 30 runs off 38 balls in Mumbai’s first innings and didn’t get a chance to bat in the second one due to his injury.

Suryakumar has played only one Test match for India in his career so far. He made his Test debut against Australia in Nagpur last year which remains his only appearance for India in whites. India’s T20I skipper managed only 8 runs in the match. Surykumar recently said he was looking forward to the red-ball season with a Test return on the cards, however, his injury is set to to derail his hopes.
