New Delhi: India’s para high jumper Nishad Kumar bagged his second successive medal at the Paralympics as he clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event in the Paris Games on Sunday. Nishad pulled off his season-best jump of 2.04m but closely missed out on the elusive gold medal as he finished second on the podium behind USA’s Roderick Townsend.
It was Nishad’s second silver medal at the Paralympics after he won a silver at the last edition of the Games in Tokyo. The Indian headed into the final aiming to better his medal colour from the Tokyo Paralympics with his sight set on the gold medal. However, he failed to clear 2.08m in his third attempt which saw him finish behind Townsend.
Nishad made a fabulous start in the final where he dominated the proceedings in the 11-man field as he produced his season-best effort of 2.04m. However, he was left disappointed after failing to clear the 2.08 mark in his third attempt. Townsend, on the other hand, managed to get his season best as he cleared 2.12m to finish on top of the podium and bag the gold medal.
There was some lovely sportsmanship on display during the final as the American was seen embracing Nishad after he appeared dejected following his failed third attempt for 2.08m following which the duo had smiles on their faces. Georgi Margiev, representing Neutral Paralympic athletes in the Paris Games, won the bronze medal in the men’s high jump T47 event.
India’s 7th medal at Paris Paralympics 2024
Nishad’s silver medal was India’s 7th medal overall at the Paris Paralympics 2024 in what has been a great start for the Indian contingent. Interestingly, it was Townsend, who had proved to be the hurdle between Nishad and the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 as well where the American finished on top of the podium in the men’s high jump t47 category.
India’s Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Sunday to extend India’s medal tally to 7 at the Games. Other Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
