New Delhi: Team India batter Suryakumar Yadav will miss the first round of the Duleep Trophy, which starts on September 5, due to a hand injury he sustained last week during the ongoing Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. Playing for Mumbai against TNCA XI in Coimbatore, right-handed Suryakumar missed the last day’s play as he did not come out to bat. He injured his hand while fielding on the third day.
As per a PTI report, BCCI sources confirmed Suryakumar’s unavailability for the Duleep Trophy’s opening round. He was set to play for his side, India C, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, against India D at Ananthapur in the first-round clash from September 5-8. The injury has led him to report at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, and he has been advised to rest. As per the playing scenario, India A and India B will simultaneously clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The ongoing Buchi Babu tournament and the upcoming Duleep Trophy will serve as an opportunity for India players in contention for a spot in the upcoming two-match Test series at home against Bangladesh which begins on September 19 in Chennai.
Suryakumar’s Test comeback
Suryakumar, who helms India’s T20I outfit, recently expressed keenness to get back into the Test side of the Indian cricket team. He has not played first-class cricket for over a year and only made himself available for the pre-season Buchi Babu Tournament to tune up for Test cricket with India as the team is set to play 10 Tests over the next five months.
Suryakumar could play just a single Test for India which came last year against Australia. He surely lacks red-ball experience having only taken the field as a substitute field majorly. Although a comeback can’t be ruled out, it all depends upon his current hand injury as to how quickly can he overcome it to get into the preparations for the packed Test schedule of Team India.
