‘Unbelievable move ‘: Ben Stokes lauds ECB for appointing Brendon McCullum as white-ball coach

New Delhi: The England Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brandon McCullum as the new head coach of the white-ball formats on September 3. McCullum, who is already the head coach of England’s Test cricket team, will now take charge of all formats, starting in 2025 under a new three-year deal that will extend his tenure until 2027.

McCullum along with Stokes has transformed the Test team with England winning 19 out of the 28 Test matches. He will be taking charge of the white-ball teams in January 2025, the month when England will tour India for the ODI and T20I series, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy.

For the home series against Australia and the West Indies tour in October-November, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has been announced as the interim white-ball coach. The Managing Director of England’s men’s cricket Rob Key said that he’s delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles with England Cricket. He also said that the ECB is very fortunate to have a coach of his quality who is committed to English cricket.

He also admitted that the formats have clashed for the last two years making it a challenge for the white-ball environment but things will ease out from January 2025. The MD also said that the ECB is confident that the new structure will bring out the best of players and coaching staff and the timing of the schedule will allow the former cricketer to dedicate himself accordingly to both roles.

McCullum will head back home for a short break after the Sri Lanka Test series and will return in time for England’s tour of Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December.

‘Jos Buttler is going to really, really enjoy having him as his coach’: Ben Stokes

England’s Test captain praised ECB for appointing McCullum as the new head coach of white-ball teams and said that he was very surprised by the news.

“I was very surprised by the news. First and foremost, I think it’s an unbelievable move for English cricket to go back to having a coach in charge of all the teams. You look at what Baz has achieved with the Test side, it’s been amazing,” Stokes told ESPNCricinfo.

He also that England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler will enjoy working with McCullum and he’s excited for the white-ball team to have the opportunity to work with him.

England Test captain Ben Stokes has praised the decision to appoint Brendon McCullum as the new head coach of limited-over formats, calling it “an unbelievable move”.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
