Does eating raw garlic really help? Study finds it may boost cardiovascular health

New Delhi: For decades, garlic has been believed to have medicinal properties in India. In a recent review published in the Journal of Frontiers in Nutrition, scientists have found that eating raw white garlic has potential health benefits for human beings.

While conducting the study their literature search found 22 similar studies (12 clinical trials, including seven common controlled trials [RCTs] and 10 clinical investigations.

Benefits of eating raw garlic

According to the study’s findings, consuming raw white garlic can significantly improve particular cardiometabolic biomarkers like lowering the total serum cholesterol levels and minimising triglyceride levels. Apart from this it also boosts the high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Moreover, it has also been found to boost anthropometric measures such as body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, and fibrinolytic activity, which are vital for breaking blood clots. Such improvements are associated with reducing the dangers of developing chronic and deadly diseases like cancer, diabetes, hypertension and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD).

However, it is critical to note that three of the clinical trials reviewed did not show significant health benefits linked with raw white garlic consumption. This shows that there is variability in the results of the research and this demands the need to be cautious to come to a conclusion.
