World Suicide Prevention Day 2024: Expert shares 5 strategies to prevent cases

New Delhi: The world is dealing with a mental health crisis, which is one of the leading causes of suicides. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2022, about 1.71 lakh people died by suicide in India. The rate of suicides has jumped to 12.4 per 1,00,000 people which is the highest rate ever recorded in the country. As per some studies, about 50 to 90 per cent of people who died by suicide also suffered from depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

The current situation seems to be grim and requires proper actions and safety measures, in this regard, on World Suicide Prevention Day, News9 spoke to Dr Sachin Baliga, Consultant – Psychiatry, who shared some preventive measures to safeguard your loved one.

Prevention Strategies:

Encourage Open Communication: Create a safe space for loved ones to share their feelings and concerns without judgment.

Monitor Mental Health: If someone around you is suffering from a mental health condition, it is better to support them with professional help for depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues.

Build a Support Network: Surround your loved ones with caring family and friends. This step may help them to find a calm environment to deal with their mental health issues.

Identify and Address Triggers: Help your loved ones cope with significant life changes or stressful events and depressive symptoms.

Remove Access to Lethal Means: Safely store firearms, medications, and other potentially harmful items. It is one of the first safety measures one should take up.

Recognising the Signs of Suicide

Verbal cues, such as expressions of hopelessness, helplessness, or suicidal thoughts.
Mood changes, including sudden withdrawal, irritability, or dramatic mood swings.
Behavioural changes, like increased risk-taking, recklessness, or self-destructive behaviours.
Physical changes, including changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels.
Preparation, such as giving away belongings, writing a will, or sudden interest in end-of-life topics.
Additionally, be mindful of a recent increase in substance use, such as excessive alcohol consumption or smoking.
