‘You can’t say that’: Cristiano Ronaldo slams Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag

New Delhi: Manchester United’s 2024/25 season campaign didn’t start well as the Red Devils lost two out of the first three matches. Erik Ten Hag’s team defeated Fulham in the opening game of the season at Old Trafford but lost against Brighton and Liverpool.

Fans and former Manchester United players are not happy with Ten Hag’s tactics and are criticising him for the poor gameplay. The Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo also joined the list and slammed the Red Devils manager for a negative mindset.

He re-joined United in 2021 and got a warm reception from the fans at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge at the club. But soon he was sacked, and things started moving in a negative direction for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. Ronaldo had many disagreements with interim manager Ralf Rangnick and things got bad to worse when The Dutchman joined the club.

Things got out of hand when The Portuguese striker gave an interview to Piers Morgan in 2022. Ronaldo criticised Manchester United and the manager after which both parties mutually terminated the contract. He joined Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr after leaving Manchester United.

‘Manchester United need to rebuild everything’: Cristiano Ronaldo

Two years after leaving the club, Ronaldo criticised Ten Hag’s approach and said as Manchester United coach you can’t say you’re not going to win the Premier League or the Champions League. He further added that as Man United manager you have to be mentally strong. Ronaldo also said that Ten Hag needs to listen to Ruud van Nistelrooy or other former players as they know the club very well.

“They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the League and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the League or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try,” Ronaldo told Rio Ferdinand in a podcast.

“If Ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can (help himself). I think it can help a lot because he knows the club and the club should listen (to) the guys who were there. You [Rio] or Roy Keane or Paul Scholes or Gary Neville, whatever, Sir Alex Ferguson. You cannot, you cannot rebuild a club without knowledge. Not guys who work in office. They understand,” he added”.

Ronaldo also said that the people who understand football are in the dressing and they know how to deal with players. He believes that Ruud is going to help because he knows that club and the fans and if Ten Hag listen to him they can improve a little bit.
