New Delhi: England defeated Australia by 3 wickets in the 2nd T20I to level the T20I series at The Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Saturday, September 14. Jake Fraser-McGurk scored a brilliant half-century after the 52-run opening partnership between Travis Head and Matt Short.
Liam Livingstone and Brydon Carse picked up two wickets each to put some pressure on Australia’s lower-middle order but a late-innings burst from Green and Aaron Hardie helped visitors to post 193 runs on the scoreboard. In reply, all-rounder Livingstone smashed 87 runs off 47 balls to help England win the second T2OI.
Fraser-McGurk fiery knock
After losing the toss, Australia got off to a flying start as stand-in skipper Travis Head and Short stitched 50 runs partnership off just 24 balls. Carse broke their opening stand and dismissed Head for 31 runs in the fifth over. Fraser-McGurk smashed three boundaries in a row off Sam Curran in the last over of the powerplay.
Even after Rashid dismissed Short in the ninth over, the 22-year-old continued his attack on England bowlers and scored his maiden T20I fifty in the 13th over. He smashed 50 runs off 31 balls, his remarkable knock was laced with four boundaries and two maximums. Josh Inglis also scored 42 runs off 26 balls but Stoinis and Tim David wickets put pressure on visitors. However, late cameos from Aaron Hardie and Cameron Green helped them to post a competitive total on the broad.
Livingstone blazes hosts England to victory
Chasing the 194 runs target, Captain Phil Salt smashed Hardie for three back-to-back maximums. Sean Abbott dismissed Will Jacks and Jordan Cox in the same over but Livingstone’s 45-run partnership with Salt got England out of the trouble. The all-rounder stitched another outstanding 90-run partnership with Jacob Bethell to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Livingstone scored 87 runs off 47 balls, his explosive knock was laced with six boundaries and five maximums. He was dismissed by Short when England needed just one run to win and Rashid Khan came in to hit the winning run off the last ball of the 19th over. The third and last T20I of the series will be played in Manchester on Sunday, September 15.
