Anwar Ali gets NOC from AIFF to join East Bengal from Mohun Bagan

New Delhi: Anwar Ali received the go-ahead from the All India Football Federation to join East Bengal on a mega buck deal on Thursday after forcibly terminating his four-year loan contract with Mohun Bagan.

The AIFF’s players status committee had initially judged Ali’s move as unjust and slapped him with a four-month ban, apart from directing the defender, his parent club during his loan transfer Delhi FC and new club East Bengal to play Rs 12.90 crore compensation.

Delhi and East Bengal were also handed two transfer window bans for inducing Ali to unilaterally terminate his Bagan contract.

On appeal, the Delhi High Court set aside the judgement as AIFF’s PSC delayed in handing the grounds of those sanctions to the guilty parties, denying them their legitimate right to appeal the sanctions and ordered fresh hearing of the case.

Following a fresh hearing on Monday, Ali was granted a no objection certificate on Thursday to join East Bengal on a permanent transfer for five years.

“Yes, as per interim order Anwar Ali has been given NOC to join East Bengal,” a person aware of the developments confirmed to News9 Sports, adding that the PSC is yet to decide on a date for the next hearing on the case.

Transfer battle

The India international, who was banned from national duty too as per the earlier order, is free to turn out for EB against Kerala Blasters in Kochi on Sunday.

The PSC had earlier issued NOC on August 3 and then levied sanctions on AUgust 10, which were later dismissed by the Delhi High Court.

In the fresh hearing, the PSC is expected to listen to arguments of all involved parties before deciding whether the termination was legal or illegal as per FIFA’s transfer laws.

If found guilty, PSC could again punish Ali, Delhi and East Bengal, with all parties free to lodge an appeal with the AIFF appeals committee and even move to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Mohun Bagan have already written a letter to the Asian Football Confederation and FIFA for Ali, Delhi FC and East Bengal’s apparent violation of rules to seek relief to sporting sanctions from the High Court.

The AFC, though yet to comment on it, is believed to be keeping tabs on the matter.
