New Delhi: Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah announced his retirement from the shortest format of cricket on Tuesday. The veteran Bangladesh player said that the third and final T20I against India in the ongoing series will be his last match in the format. India, who are 1-0 up in the series, will play their last T20I vs Bangladesh on Wednesday while both the nations will lock horns in the third and final game on Saturday.
In the pre-match press conference ahead of the second game of the ongoing series, the cricketer announced his decision to retire, saying that it is the right time to call it quits and concentrate on the ODIs. “Yes, I’m retiring from T20Is after the last game of this series. It was pre-decided,” he said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the second T20I against India here.
Right time to retire from T20Is
“It’s the right time to move on from this format and concentrate on ODI,” he added. The 38-year-old Bangladesh player, who made his debut in 2007, has played 50 Tests, 232 ODIs and 139 T20Is. The former Bangladesh T20 skipper had called time on his Test career in 2021. He could not do much in the first T20I against India as he fell victim to pacer Mayank Yadav for just 1 run.
“It was pre-decided. Before coming here, I had a chat with my family, coach and captain here, selectors. I conveyed to the board president as well. I think it is the right time to move on from this format and try to focus on the one day games coming ahead. Going forward, it is the right time for me and the team as well, looking at the next World Cup,” he added.
Bangladesh’s next ODI assignment includes a series against Afghanistan, which will be followed by another one against the West Indies before the 2025 Champions Trophy.
