Gardner, Perry star as Australia Women beat New Zealand to seal series

New Delhi: Australia beat New Zealand by 29 runs in the second women’s T20I at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Sunday, September 22. Alyssa Healy and Co. also won the first match by seven wickets and won the T20I series with one game to go.

Gardner shines with ball

Ashleigh Gardner picked up 3 wickets and gave away just 17 runs in the four over to help Australia defend the 143-run target. New Zealand started their innings well and stitched a 37-run partnership for the opening wicket.

Georgia Wareham provided the first breakthrough for the Aussies and removed Georgia Plimmer on 9 runs. Gardner took her first wicket and dismissed Amelia Kerr on 6 runs. Sutherland put the visitors in more trouble by removing Sophie Devine on 4 runs.

Suzie Bates batted well but Darcie Brown picked her wickets on 34 runs. Maddy Green and Isabella Gaze stitched a 35-run partnership for the sixth wicket but Gardner ended their partnership by dismissing Maddy Green on 22 runs. The Whiteferns failed to chase down the target and only managed to score 113 runs for the lost of seven wickets in 20 overs.

Healy, Perry help Australia to post 142 runs

Earlier, Skipper Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry batted brilliantly and helped the team set a 143-run target for New Zealand. Healy scored 38 runs off 25 balls with the help of six boundaries and Perry also scored 34 runs. All-rounder Gardner scored 18 runs but other Australian batters failed to make an impact with the bat.
