The origin of the Mahalaxmi Vrat Katha (or Peele Dhage vrat katha) is deeply rooted in ancient Hindu tradition. As per the popular story, a poor Brahmin lived in a village, and he was a devout worshipper of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with the Brahmin’s unwavering devotion, Lord Vishnu asked him to make a wish. The Brahmin expressed his desire for Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, to reside in his home and bless his family with prosperity.
Lord Vishnu then revealed the path to attain the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. He told the Brahmin that a woman, who was none other than Lakshmi herself, would visit the temple to make cow dung cakes, and he should invite her to his home. Following Vishnu’s guidance, the Brahmin waited at the temple early in the morning and, upon seeing the woman, invited her to his house.
Understanding that the invitation was prompted by Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi instructed the Brahmin to observe the Mahalaxmi Vrat for 16 days. She assured him that after offering water (Arghya) to the Moon on the 16th day, his wish would be granted. The Brahmin, after worshipping Lakshmi with devotion, fulfilled the fast and was blessed with wealth and prosperity. This is the popular Mahalaxmi ki Vrat Katha that is recited during the puja.
Significance of Mahalaxmi Vrat
The Mahalaxmi Vrat is observed for 16 days, though it is not a strict fast without water (Nirjala Vrat). Grains are prohibited, but devotees are allowed to consume fruits during this period. On the 16th day, the fast concludes with a special ceremony called Udyapan. Those unable to observe the full 16-day fast can observe it for the first or last three days, which is also considered auspicious.
Devotees believe that observing the Mahalaxmi Vrat brings quick fulfilment of wishes and brings lasting happiness and prosperity into the home. Women also tie a yellow thread (known as the Peele Dhage) to seek the protection of Goddess Lakshmi for their family.
Mahalaxmi Mantra
During the fast, devotees chant the mantra, Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah, to focus their minds and deepen their connection with the divine. This sacred mantra helps in amplifying the spiritual benefits of the Mahalaxmi Puja.
