New Delhi: Nuclear weapons have not only changed the mode of warfare but have also pushed the planet to the brink of extinction. If used, these weapons can cause unprecedented devastating effects, as Japan experienced during World War II. Every year on September 26, International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed to rid the Earth of these deadly weapons and make it a better place to live in. In this article, we will learn more about this day.
How did the day originate?
In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared September 26 to be the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Also known as the Nuclear Abolition Day, its goal is to increase public awareness about the threat of nuclear weapons and the necessity to eliminate them. Since 2014, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed every year. The day encourages everyone to commemorate and promote the day by enhancing public awareness and education about the deadly danger of nuclear weapons.
The UNGA resolution which established the day also calls for progress on a nuclear weapons convention so that nuclear weapons are eliminated by involving all parties under strict and effective international control. Notably, September 26 was the date in 1983 when the Soviet Union almost mistakenly launched a nuclear weapon because its warning system mistakenly detected a US ballistic missile attack against Moscow.
What is the significance of the day?
In a world torn with conflict, we must work towards achieving global nuclear disarmament. Several steps have been taken towards that goal and yet, around 12,100 nuclear weapons still exist today. Countries which have nuclear weapons are working to modernize their nuclear arsenals. Over half of the population of the world resides in countries that either have such weapons or are members of nuclear alliances.
The number of deployed nuclear weapons has reduced considerably since the Cold War, but the presence of nuclear weapons is still a threat. Moreover, no nuclear disarmament negotiations are currently underway. Every year, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons gives an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament and also to educate the public about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons. The main goal of the day is to eliminate nuclear weapons by increasing public awareness and education on the dangers of nuclear weapons so that the world moves towards achieving the common goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.
