India Super League: Sunil Chhetri becomes all-time leading goal scorer in ISL

New Delhi: In the Indian Super League (ISL), the nation’s premier football league, Indian football star Sunil Chhetri achieved yet another remarkable feat: he rose to the position of all-time top goalscorer. At the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Saturday, the veteran, who was level with Bartholomew Ogbeche on 63 goals, scored his 64th ISL goal from the penalty spot to help Bengaluru FC defeat Mohun Bagan SG, the reigning ISL champions, 3-0.

According to an ISL news release, the penalty marked the 40-year-old’s 57th ISL goal for Bengaluru FC. He had previously scored seven goals for Mumbai City FC in the league while playing for the Islanders in the 2015 and 2016 campaigns. Chhetri who announced his retirement from international football this year, in June, has continued to contribute for his club and netted his third goal of the 2024-25 season.

He currently leads the charts for goals in the ISL, a place where he has been often in his career. Speaking to ISL Media after the game, Chhetri deflected attention away from his milestone as he rejoiced at an important win.

This is what Chhetri had to say

The Indian icon said that he was overjoyed to have won the match. Chhetri further added that his squad and his team mates were heavily involved in his success and the goals that he has scored. During the game, Chhetri gave Bengaluru FC an incredible performance. He not only scored a historic goal but also set up Suresh Singh for the second. Chhetri also produced two opportunities and finished 10 of his 16 passes attempted. Edgar Mendez, Suresh, and Chhetri all scored goals, which was sufficient to win all three points against the Mariners.

With three games played, the Blues have amassed nine points—seven goals and zero goals conceded—topping the standings, marking their best-ever ISL season start. On Wednesday, the Blues will play their first away game of the season when they visit the Mumbai Football Arena to play Mumbai City FC, the reigning ISL Cup winners.
