The Grand Egyptian Museum, designed by Dublin studio Heneghan Peng Architects, is set to open this year. The museum will hold more than 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts and is designed based on the shape of the pyramids. The museum’s grand entrance atrium showcases a colossal statue of Ramses II and offers stunning views of the Giza Plateau and the pyramids.

The Smritivan Earthquake Museum is a place that honours the memory of the 2001 earthquake in Smritivan, Gujarat, which caused the loss of 12,932 lives. Architect Rajeev Kathpalia from Vastu Shilpa Sangath designed the museum using sand-coloured stone to create a terraced structure that resembles a ruined fortress. The museum features galleries that climb up a steep incline and are connected by a winding path. Surrounding the museum are 12,932 trees planted by Kathpalia, symbolising each life lost. These trees are watered by 50 reservoirs, and each is engraved with the names of the earthquake victims. The museum contains seven blocks: Rebirth, Rediscover, Restore, Rebuild, Rethink, Relive, and Renew. Each block represents a different aspect of the museum’s significance. The museum showcases artefacts, art, and virtual-reality displays that explore Gujarat’s topography, its vulnerability to natural disasters, and the recovery story.
Simose Art Museum, Hiroshima, Japan
Designed by architect Shigeru Ban, the Simose Art Museum in Japan features eight mobile galleries in multicoloured glass atop a reflective pool. The museum features a modern garden with seasonal plants and flowers. It also showcases art by famous artists like Emil Gallé, Matisse, and Chagall. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the Setouchi Islands from the museum’s rooftop.
Paleis Het Loo, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands
The new extension to the Paleis Het Loo is a modern addition to the 17th-century former royal palace near Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. Designed by Rotterdam firm KAAN Architecten, the extension utilises the palace’s hydraulic systems to create an underground space with glass skylights and white marble galleries. It houses a museum for children and a permanent exhibition on the Dutch royal family.
